What is the NYC Civic Engagement Commission?: In November 2018, New York City voters approved three ballot initiatives proposed by the 2018 Charter Revision Commission. This established the NYC CEC, which can be found in Chapter 76 of the NYC Charter. The Commission will:
  • Run a citywide participatory budgeting program with guidance from a participatory budgeting advisory committee;
  • Partner with community-based organizations and civic leaders, increase awareness of City services, and assist New York City agencies in developing civic engagement initiatives;
  • Develop a plan to consider the language access needs of limited English proficient New Yorkers with regards to the Commission’s programs and services and provide language interpreters at poll sites by the 2020 general election, with advice from a language assistance advisory committee; and
  • Provide assistance to community boards.
Purpose of this Meeting: The NYC Civic Engagement Commission released the Proposed Methodology for the Poll Site Language Assistance Program on December 31st,2019.
The Proposed Methodology provides a comprehensive look as to how language assistance will be implemented at poll sites during local elections. The public can contribute comments from January 1st until March 1st, 2020. This meeting provides an opportunity for students to listen, learn, and make suggestions for language assistance policy in NYC.
