Nature and Purpose of Agency
MOMMAS is a home for young mothers aged 18 to 24 years and their babies. For approximately two years, the young mothers at MOMMAS House continue education or vocational experience interrupted by pregnancy. With guidance and direction, the young mothers can learn to support themselves and their children independently.
Tasks available for students
Volunteers are needed for various tasks including providing childcare, tutoring, creating a donation drive, fundraising, web design, marketing and brochure design, event coordination, and workshop presentations.
A workshop presenter has something to offer our mothers. A unique educational experience that will open their eyes to important life skills; this includes parenting skills, newborn care, nutrition, budgeting, resume writing, conflict management, cooking, exercise class...you name it! We want to expose our residents to as much information as possible. Anything that you think would enrich their lives; we want to hear about it. Workshops typically take place in the evening (6:30 to about 8:30) Monday to Thursday. We have three residences in Hempstead, Jericho, and Glen Cove, but if you would only like to present locally, we will work with your schedule. You will be asked to give us a brief outline of what you will be discussing with the girls, and copies of any materials you may hand out.
Time Requirements
Flexible schedule. No volunteer opportunities on the weekend.
Workshops: 6:30 to about 8:30pm Monday to Thursday
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
Before a volunteer can start, each volunteer will need to fill out a volunteer application at a orientation session, provide a picture I.D. (license or school I.D.), go through a simple background check free of charge (done on site with a quick turnaround) and attend an orientation session. Orientation session happens once a month in the Wantagh office at 7pm. For more Information on volunteering/orientations, please contact Jill Klein at: volunteer@mommashouse.org
