Nature and Purpose of Agency:

Literacy Nassau is a Long Island-based not-for profit organization that makes literacy services accessible to disadvantaged populations of all ages by providing donation-based language-building programs. We provide ESL and Basic Literacy classes for adults and Orton-Gillingham tutoring for children with dyslexia.

Not everyone can read this sentence.  1 in 10 Nassau County adults cannot read a job application, write an email, or speak with their child's teacher.  Since 1968, Literacy Nassau has trained, mobilized, and supported a county-wide volunteer effort to address this problem.

Literacy Nassau is the only organization in Nassau County serving adults who cannot function in a typical classroom. Non-traditional methods meet adult students where they are in their journey and help them achieve personal goals, such as becoming a U.S. Citizen, learning English, passing a driver's test, getting a job, or simply reading for pleasure.

Tasks Available for Students:

Students who volunteer will have the opportunity to help out with registrations, office administrative tasks, social media and marketing.

**If a volunteer wishes to commit 3 hours per week for 10 weeks he or she may teach a small group at a nearby library.**

Time Requirements:

Student Awareness/Special Instructions:

Volunteers are required to attend a one hour orientation.
